Cornell University is proud to offer you several exciting opportunities to acclimate to Cornell before formal orientation begins. You can enjoy the outdoors, engage in community service, develop leadership skills, or participate in a special program for international students. All of the programs are designed to give you a head start on meeting other new Cornellians, making friends, and settling in to life at Cornell. Additionally, all of the programs include highly committed upper-level students – many of whom participated in their own pre-orientation program. Now, as student leaders, they will introduce you to the Cornell experience, share the traditions of our campus, answer questions, challenge you to work with teams, and make sure you have a whole lot of fun!
If you think you might like to come to campus before formal orientation begins and participate in one of the pre-orientation experiences, read the program descriptions contained in the following pages. If any of the programs interest you, visit the web site of that program to learn how to register. The number of participants is limited and each program will determine participation on a first-come, first-served basis, so make your plans early.
We look forward to meeting you and hope that you find the right pre-orientation experience for you! |

Environmental Career Skills (ECS) program participants have said, “This trip was incredible.”…. “Besides just having fun, I’ve met awesome people all interested in the same things as me.”…. “I can honestly say that I am currently more prepared for my studies at Cornell, and more excited.”
Join us at Cornell’s Arnot Forest for a 3-day program where we guarantee that you will make strong and lasting connections with peers and faculty who share an interest in the environment. You will also make close friendships prior to moving onto campus. This is an excellent way to have fun while learning methods and principles of conservation ecology, forestry, and stream ecology. Throughout the 3 days, you will be directly involved in hands-on experiences with modern field sampling methods to study plants, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. In addition, during the famous “Woodland Olympiad” and other skill and team-building activities, you will learn outdoor skills that will be invaluable, whether you are planning a career in an environmental field or just enjoy spending time outdoors.

PREPARE — Cornell University encourages all incoming international undergraduate
students to arrive in Ithaca four days prior to University Orientation in
order to participate in PREPARE, the international pre-orientation program.
This program provides travel-weary international undergraduate students
with an early start on their Cornell experience. During these four days,
newcomers will get ready to face college life and make friends who will last
throughout their Cornell years and beyond.
PREPARE will give you a chance to recover from travel fatigue and confusion before plunging into
other orientation activities and academic tasks. PREPARE will teach you about Cornell’s student
life and traditions, while also providing practical tips on adjusting
to your new environment. Our program provides the unique opportunity
to ask questions and discuss issues with officials from throughout
the University, including staff from health services, campus safety,
and academic departments. |
